Super
Initially I was going to hold off and post a blog entry after the game tonight but figured that holding off on posting entries is the main reason I haven't been making any on a consistent basis. So with a little over 9 hours from now before Super Bowl XLII kicks off and I'll sit and type...for now.
I woke up after a restless sleep at around 7:45 AM and decided to not fool myself and get up already. I knew what I had to do to get ready for the game (as if my actions could influence the events of the game). I am going to try and replicate the playoff routine that has gotten me and my team to this point in this unlikely season.
First, I will go to the 10:00 mass at Good Shepherd with my parents but will take my car and meet them at the Church. I realize that this isn't the best way to conserve gas but I've come to far now to deviate from this course of action now.
Next, immediately after mass I will go to Dunkin Donuts on Furrows Road and get my usual Medium size coffee (light and sweet) and proceed to go home.
Upon arriving at my house I will then don the clothes that I have worn the last 3 playoff Sundays namely, my trusty pair of Levi's 501 jeans (everyone has that pair of good old reliable jeans don't they?), along with the t-shirt I got at Smith Haven Mall over 17 years ago (the last time the Giants won the Super Bowl). For sports afficionados and die hard Giants fans would really appreciate this relic from past glory because on it is the front page of "The National" which was the very first newspaper dedicated to sports.
I remember that being the coolest thing ever because, this was before the internet and before sports blogs and sports radio. Needless to say "The National" didn't last that much longer after that fateful Sunday in 1991 (God has it really been that long?) but it is a cool reminder of that time in my life when everything seemed possible.
The image of that front page on this lucky t-shirt is the image of Giants' Safety Myron Guyton streaking across the field with his arms stretched out in victory while passing Scott Norwood and Frank Reich look on at Norwood's doomed 47-yd FG attempt which sailed wide right to the 20-19 win for the G-Men. Along the top of the page is simply the word "Superest!" which is how I felt about that team at that time.
There are many similarities to that game and the one that will be played tonight. Back then the U.S. had just sent troops to Kuwait to thwart Saddam Hussein and now 21 years later our military is entrenched in the Middle East once again, this time trying to hold Iraq together so that democracy can prosper.
Back then the Giants overcame the heavily favored San Franciso 49ers in an epic battle on the road on a last second FG (the 5th of the game!) by Matt Bahr. And as everyone now knows the Giants have been absolute Road Warriors this whole season. And in the Super Bowl they faced a Buffalo Bills team that was an absolute offensive juggernaut led by Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas and Andre Reed where they were also cast as the heavy underdog. You see what I'm getting at?
Anyway I digress.
So along with the same jeans, same shirt I also have to wear the same shoe I've been wearing (my trusty Merrells) and topped off with my NY Giants beanie I bought on NFLproshop.com at the beginning of the season because I liked how it looked on the players who wore them on the sideline.
After getting dressed in my playoff garb I'll then take my dogs (Beamer and Pogie) on their daily walk but I will also take them on our playoff route along Patchogue-Holbrook road past the Nicholls road overpass to the "other" Greenbelt Parkway and then back.
Then after that I'll head to the gym to try and work off this mounting Super Bowl anxiety and head over to Bong's house to witness history.
